A high resolution hydraulic servo has been developed which has attained a positional resolution of better than one part in ten thousand and also maintains a rapid response. A switching technique, which greatly reduces the effects of fricition and nonlinear flow, is employed in the hydraulic valve. The control is based on a time proportioning of the switching events within the valve in a manner that produces an acceleration. of the output piston proportional to the servo error signal and at a repetition frequency of several hundred cycles per second.
