Attention is called to the many applications of the techniques of power spectral analysis to the dynamic problems of aircraft involving random disturbances, and for reference purposes a rather large list of references is given. A review is made of the fundamental input-output relation that applies for the condition of a single input. A derivation is then given of the input-output relation that applies where multiple random inputs are involved. Finally example applications of this relation are made to the problem of airplane gust encounter, where variations in turbulence along the span are taken into account. These examples illustrate that spanwise effects can cause the response to be either greater or less, depending on the case, than the response obtained with the commonly used assumption of uniform spanwise turbulence.
