This paper describes the advanced research and development in the USA on air traffic control and air navigation. The navigation and traffic control system in the USA is common to all users. Military and civil aviation both are controlled and handled by the same equipment and procedures. The research and development carried out for the common system is done at various government laboratories under the direction of the Air Navigation Development Board. The research and development program of the Air Navigation Development Board includes automatic approach and landing, automatic scheduling of aircraft, automatic communications fom aircraft to ground, and between control centers, automatic computation of air space reservation, automatic position reporting, and automatic identification.
