Todays high-performance aircraft have become almost completely dependent on automatic controls. Automatie pilots, which might once have been discussed by themselves, now tend to be submerged in an integrated flight-control system which comprises all the means for manual or automatic stabilization and control of the aircraft attitude and flight path. To illustrate this trend, aircraft body axis rate stabilization, force steering, and remote gyro indication are traced from their wartime German origins to their embodiment in the Lear L-10 Automatie Pilot.
