In Part I, the lecture deals briefly with the post-war developments in civil aviation, from the design and manufacturing side, and describes the many conflicting requirements that must be met. For many of the design problems considered, it is shown that they are largely due to the development and testing of the turbine engines and the way in which these tasks have been and still are being solved. Attention is drawn to the valuable documents that have resulted from many millions of test flight hours on older aircraft types; the importance of practical engineering experience in addition to the theoretical treatment of construction and development problems is emphasized. The developments in the design of pressure cabin and the advantages of elliptical openings in such cabins are discussed. The question of view and the difficulties that arise are dealt with in detail. The effects of large temperature differences are briefly discussed and the Redux process for metal gluing is described. In connection with the production of very smooth surfaces, a new interesting device for measuring and recording the waviness of wing surfaces is discussed; Savings of up to 95% compared to the previously used control procedures should be possible. In Part II of the lecture the general construction data of the Vickers Viscount are listed and the various interesting properties of this model of a post-war civil aircraft are explained. Particular attention is paid to the security question and the design effort for security; the need to reduce the risk of fire during crash landings and the speed of fire spread is emphasized. The way to achieve security in the construction of the Vickes Viscount is shown.
