We are continuing to lose aircraft because of structural fatigue. The prediction of structural fatigue problems and the control of safety are not simple matters. They must be approached systematically with a full knowledge of the effects of all the variables and uncertainty. This paper describes the practical objective of fatigue life management and outlines some important but less well recognised implications of the standard techniques. These imphcations include those associated with predicting the onset of problems, damage rate monitoring in service, flying under the umbrella of someone elses fleet, the application of retirement lives, and with maintaining safety by inspection.
