Zusammenfassung:
The recently started research programme on transition prediction at the Institute of Gas Dynamics of the University of Naples has the objective of studying and improving the modern variants of the e^N method with an eye to both theoretical and numerical applicative issues. Currently a computer algorithm has been developed that calculates the evolution of the amplitude of 2D Tollmien-Schlichting waves in a boundary layer at the first two orders of approximation of multiple-scale theory. We consider this older approach preferable to the so-called Parabolized Stability Equation, although comparative tests are still in our plans. In addition to these tests, future research programmes include ray optics and diffraction of 3D instabilities, the possible rise of self-excited oscillations through feedback, and numerically faster methods for solving the Orr-Sommerfeld problem that is at the core of all these procedures.
