Titel:
Active Twist Control of a Wind Tunnel Model Wing

Zusammenfassung:
The spars of windtunnel model wings are often made of box beam type, bearing the occuring torsional and bending loads. Especially the requirements on torsional stiffnes for reaching sufficient measuring accuracy are often unfullfillable. Furtheron, the geometrical restrictions due to the limitations of the wingcrossection result in a boxbeam-construction with plain coupling of torsion and warping. This normally undesired effect is on the other hand usable for active twist control by applying local strains resulting in warping and thus in correction of torsion caused by aerodynamic loads. These warping strains are proposed to be generated by tubular stringers, subjected to hydraulic pressure. Even some eigenvibrations within a limited range of frequencies could be excited or damped that way. The goal of this paper is to show up a method, describing the mechanical behavior of a box beam with varying crossections and applied loads, using the transfer matrix method. This method is applied to a wing spar of box beam type and is pointed out to be a usefull tool to predict the deflection behavior and thus, to manipulate torsional deflection by applying local warping deflections. In case of regular structures, as found here, this method is very advantageous in terms of modelisation effort and required calculation time and capacity compared to the finite element method and is a helpfull tool for preliminary studies with a large amount of parametervariations.
