Titel:

Actuator Positioning within the Mechanical Design of Active Structures

Zusammenfassung:
The hierarchical integrated structure/control design methodology is applied to the design of complex Active Structures. This methodology foresees an independent design of the structure and the controller. However both designs apply infonnations and techniques specific of the other discipline. Up to now the controller design techniques were mostly emphasized. The present paper contributes to the design of Active Structures from the point of view of the structure engineer. It presents supplementary criteria that are to be taken into account within the structural design for positioning sensors and actuators. The most imponant equations (structure, outputs, measurements, actuators, generic controller) are presented as well as the basic assumptions mainly stochastic excitations and white noise. The structural design is based as usual on finite element analyses, but the optimization applies new criteria issued from the extended Modal Cost Analysis technique and the implementation and rough design of a LQG generic controller. The actuators and sensors are selected and included one by one. The meaning of the most imponant items are pointed out, looking at a telescopic mast as an application example.
