In this paper the concept of smart structures is discussed with main emphasis in the field of high precision structures. Firstly, the concept of smart structures and their elements are outlined and some typical scenarios for space applications are given. The design problem is stated as a mathematical optimzation problem and the essential steps to treat the system equations are discussed. Optimal shape control of precision reflectors is treated in some detail with examples. Finally, the use of piezoelectric materials and especially piezopolymers as actuator in precision structures is investigated.
