Abstract:
A variationally consistent, analytical linear beam theory that describes the model in a Timoshenko-Vlasov level is developed using the foundation of the Reissner's mixed variational theorem. Formulated based on the shell theory, all the field governing equations (equilibrium and continuity) and the boundary conditions of the shell wall as well as the stiffness constants of the beam are derived in closed form. In the beam constitutive relations, no peculiar or ad hoc assumptions are introduced to simplify the analysis. The mixed method enables to obtain the reactive stresses and sectional warpings (both in- and out-of-plane) which are evaluated through a progressive step, depending on the level of the beam approximations. The stress recovery capability is incorporated in the post stage of the analysis to compute the sectional stresses distributed over the beam cross-section. The current analysis is validated on sectional warpings, stiffnesses, and stresses for several benchmark examples available in the literature. The comparison study demonstrates good agreements with detailed three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) analysis and state-of-the-art beam analysis results. The influence of including the in-plane warpings is shown to be marginal on stiffness constants of a thin-walled box beam, with slightly improved predictions.
