Abstract:
In the present paper, a numerical analysis of the flight dynamics of a small-scale side-by-side helicopter is presented. The aim is to study the trim and stability characteristics of a first prototype dual-rotor VTOL by employing iterative procedures and a suitable modeling approach. According to the trim conditions, the design and control mix allow for piloting the rotorcraft as a classical helicopter, using collective pitch and longitudinal/lateral cyclic controls to move forward and laterally. The stability analysis highlights a few criticalities related to the rotors configuration and center of mass position. Nevertheless, the configuration turns out to be a good candidate for future services in urban air mobility ecosystem. The original contribution of the paper is represented by the modeling framework adopted for the analysis and the particular case studied. Indeed, the presence of the shrouds and the constructive design of this rotorcraft make its level of societal acceptance higher than classical VTOLs.
